A non-contact, non-optical measurement system, the Millmate Strip Scanner determines the edge positions of a metal strip in a rolling mill down to millimeter resolution. It measures the width of the strip and indicates off-center deviation with equal definition. These measurements can be used to provide critical input to other mill functions, such as flatness control and center position control (cpc).

In the demanding rolling mill environment, it has always been difficult to achieve accuracy, stability, and long-term reliability in edge position measurement. The Millmate Strip Scanner solves this problem by introducing a new and unique operating principle.

"Measuring beams," positioned under each edge of the strip, house transducers that derive measurements from pulsating electromagnetic fields. The fields are influenced by the metal strip in such a way that signals can be generated representing strip position. As a result, unlike optical systems, the Millmate Strip Scanner is not affected by oil, water, coolants, or other substances that are airborne or otherwise present in the mill environment.

Measurement signals are continuously fed to remote control electronics that provide output for process control and diagnostics, and receive communications via keypad entry or computer link.
